The HPU Genesis Gospel Choir
Genesis, a student gospel choir, is under the direction of Valerie Payne. Genesis rehearses on Sunday evenings throughout the academic year, and they sing for several Chapel services. They are the featured choir for our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. service each January, and they sing for several community and regional events.

THE HPU Petal Points

The Petal Points are an all female a cappella singing group from High Point University and are entirely student led. The group consists of 13 girls, ranging from freshmen to seniors. You can see the group performing throughout the year at events around campus, in concert, and around the community. They have also performed to an international audience at the fall and spring Furniture Market.

The Petal Points are a diverse group of girls and are members of other organizations as well, including Greek organizations, Genesis Gospel
Choir, Chapel Choir, University Singers, Theater productions, and HPU’s track team. The group meets three times a week to prepare for upcoming gigs. The Petal Points have a concert at the end of every Spring semester to showcase all of their hard work. The current president is Ashlie Workman ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. At High Point University, we are blessed with immense resources and tremendously talented people! One place this talent is displayed most prominently is within the Music Department and the many ensembles. We hope you will give serious consideration to the ways YOU can become involved in music. We have a place for EVERYONE who loves to sing or play an instrument.

As we look forward to a new year, we will have new opportunities and leadership within our music department. We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Marc Ashley Foster as the Chair of the Department of Music and Director of Choral Activities. Together with Dr. Alexa
Schlimmer and Mrs. Marcia Dills, the music in the Chapel at HPU will be bursting with excitement and new energies.

Here are the Chapel ensembles we invite you to consider becoming a part of this year:

The Chapel Choir (MUS115) is an auditioned ensemble that serves as the resident choir of the Charles E. Hayworth Sr. Memorial Chapel and provides music on a regular basis for chapel services throughout the academic year. Chapel Choir auditions are held at the beginning of each semester during the first week of classes. Participants in the Chapel Choir can receive a financial stipend each semester and will receive academic credit.

The High Point University Singers (MUS117) is a non-auditioned ensemble that studies and performs a varied repertoire of choral classics for Chapel worship services and the concert stage. University Singers may be taken for academic credit.

Other extra-curricular vocal ensembles include the Genesis Gospel Choir and two student-directed a cappella ensembles, the Toccatatones and the
Petal Points. These ensembles perform in chapel services and other venues on and off campus.

Please remember the number of ways you can contribute to the University community through music. You would be taking part in a music program that enriches the lives of everyone involved, both participants and listeners alike. If you would like to be involved in our program, or if you have
questions and would like more information on these or other music programs, please feel free to contact us.
